Position Overview:
The Land Survey Field Crew Chief is responsible for leading a field survey crew in performing boundary, topographic, construction, and other land surveying projects. This role requires strong technical skills, leadership ability, and knowledge of surveying methods, equipment, and safety practices. The Crew Chief ensures field data is collected accurately and efficiently while coordinating with office staff and project managers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Direct and supervise a field survey crew on various project types (boundary, topographic, ALTA, construction staking, etc.).
- Operate and maintain survey instruments including total stations, GPS/GNSS, data collectors, and levels.
- Ensure accurate and complete data collection, field notes, and sketches.
- Interpret construction and design plans for layout and staking tasks.
- Train, mentor, and oversee crew members to maintain productivity and safety.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, and office staff regarding project progress and issues.
- Perform quality control on field work and verify accuracy before submission.
- Manage daily field logistics including equipment, supplies, and vehicle use.
- Adhere to company safety standards and ensure crew compliance.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s in Surveying/Geomatics preferred).
- 3+ years of land surveying experience, with at least 1 year in a crew leadership role.
- Proficiency with robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS, and data collection systems.
- Strong knowledge of field survey methods and procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and legal descriptions.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions and lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Skills (Optional):
- Survey Technician certification or LSIT.
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar software.
- Familiarity with DOT or municipal standards.
